The old rugged cross      (Listen to midi)

              D           D7                G
1. On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross,
            A               A7                    D
the emblem of suffering and shame,
                                    D7                      G               Em
and I love that old cross where the dearest and best
               A               A7                  D
for a world of lost sinners was slain.

             A                                  D
So I'll cherish the old rugged cross,
            G                              D
till my trophies at last I lay down.
                           D7                G
I will cling to the old rugged cross,
               D                     A             D
and exchange it some day for a crown.

                     D            D7                G
2. O that old rugged cross, so despised by the world,
                A                 A7             D
has a wondrous attraction for me,
                                       D7                 G      Em
for the dear Lamb of God left His glory above,
           A           A7            D
to bear it to dark Calvary.

             A                                  D
So I'll cherish the old rugged cross,
            G                              D
till my trophies at last I lay down.
                           D7                G
I will cling to the old rugged cross,
               D                     A             G - D
and exchange it some day for a crown.

(capo 3rd)          (Patsy Cline)
